Just last year, Red Deer welcomed their 100,000th citizen! This was a huge stepping stone for the third largest city in Alberta. Why? Well because it shows that the continuous progression of great new neighbourhoods, schools and facilities are making Red Deerians happy campers! People love the amenities that Red Deer offers in comparison to other major city centres such as Calgary and Edmonton, and not having to deal with the rush hour traffic!

As Red Deer continues to grow the number of new and expanding neighbourhoods does as well, giving buyers a lot of different options to choose from. With all of these options, buyers go into each property and compare all of them by the features within the homes themselves. However, some home buyers are not taking into consideration the importance of examining the neighbourhood as well! It is important to determine what is important to you in your new neighbourhood. Here are some things to consider while you are looking…

Schools – Schools are extremely important whether you currently have children or not. Why? For a couple of reasons. You may want kids in the future which familiarizes yourselves with the area before you grow your family. Secondly, well known schools safeguard steady demand for properties located closely to them which is attractive for re-sale value.

Public Services – People want to live in a clean space! When you are in your potential neighbourhood, investigate! Are the streets clean? Parks well maintained? Do you notice any public transportation or signs to help get you to public transport? Do not find out to late, do your research before!

Parks & Greenspace – Speaking of parks… are there any? How much green space would you like in your new neighbourhood and does it have it? It is nice to have access to parks, paths and open green spaces close to your home. Having the ability to go for a walk or bike ride in and around your neighbourhood on a nice day can brighten anyone’s spirits. Having direct access to play pass with your kids without worrying about the ball rolling onto the road is a sigh of relief.

Noise – Let’s be honest, we all hope that we don’t get that noisy neighbour! However, not all of us get so lucky. What you can do to try and sway the odds in your favour is to explore this prior to making your home purchase. Take a drive or a walk in your potential neighbourhood and see what it is like. Talk to current residents to get valuable insight on what they think of it!

Restaurants, Shops & Nightlife – Do you want to be just steps away from favourite restaurants and shops? Having the option to be walking distance to the best bars and entertainment might be right up your alley. Determine if this is important to you, as this has a huge impact on where you want to locate yourself within the city. You may be more interested in the hustle and bustle of living downtown.

While you are on the hunt for your new home, narrow down a few main features you want your neighbourhood to encompass. Try your best to stick to these as they will play a major role in your happiness in wherever you decide to locate yourself. Don’t just do a walk through of the home, but a walk through of your neighbourhood as well!
